A Day in My Summer Life

A Day in My Summer Life My typical summer weekday runs as follows: 5 AM: Beep-beep-beep-beep my alarm goes off, I look out my window, and I realize that once again, Im awake before the sun has risen fully: Im living at UPenn this summer, along with 50 or so fellow Merck interns (or Merckterns though I dont much care for this nickname, lol). I have three suitemates, and since all of us are used to showering in the morning instead of at night, my mornings tend to (1) start early, and (2) be a little hectic :( 5:30 AM: Done showering, dressing, throwing my hair into some kind of order. Time to make lunch! Salad + fruit + almonds + a roll orrr PBJ sandwich orrrr I decide Im too lazy to make my lunch and that Ill just buy something at the Merck cafeteria (the latter happens way too often, sigh one of my summer goals was to improve my culinary habits, but I am currently failing miserably). p.s. Ive been spending way too much time on the Food section of Pinterest lately. Might make the following this week :) 6:00 AM: I grab my bag and head out the door to make the 20-minute walk to the train station to catch the 6:30 train to Pennbrook, the closest station to Mercks West Point location. 6:30 AM 7:30 AM: pass out on the train and hope that I wake up to my 7:20 alarm. 7:30 AM: Finally at Merck! I cant actually talk about my specific project, but just as a general overview, Im working in Mercks vaccine division this summer. Ive learned so much!! Though Im pre-med and am pretty set on becoming a doctor, I wanted to get a little insight into the pharma aspect of medicine. Working at Merck and meeting people who have worked on high-profile vaccines like Gardasil (for HPV) and Zostavax (for shingles) has been both humbling and amazing. I found out that it takes 20 years, on average, for a vaccine to go from RD to clinical trials and approval. The people at Merck are so passionate about helping people. 4:30 PM 6:00 PM: I leave Merck for the day and start my 1.5- hour-long trip home. And this is where my day gets a little variety. I generally do one or more of the following: (1) Med School Apps = O.O NEVER. ENDING. Seriously. There are multiple stages in the process: primary apps, secondary apps, interviews, then acceptances/rejections. Im only done with the first step (primaries) 25% done with the apps, woohoo! (2) Planning for Camp Kesem 2012   we have 95 kids and 50 counselors coming together for CK 2012 (CK = a summer camp for kids of cancer patients, with chapters all over the U.S.) this August. Its going to be awesome!! But theres also a tonnn of planning involved: fundraising, planning daily activities, coordinating with counselors/campers/camper families, checking in with CK National, and more. (3) TV Show Marathons: I LOVE SUITSSS. (4) Arts and Crafts :) There are a lot of things I havent had as much time for during college, including reading for fun, dancing as much as I used to in high school, and drawing. I took some time these past few weeks to catch up my novice artistic side: 10:30 PM: Lights out! And then repeat the above all over again. More soon (read: later this week) about weekends/fun stuff that has happened this summer. Peace!

The Television Remote Control A Brief History

It was in June of 1956 that the practical television remote controller first entered the American home. However, as far back as 1893, a remote control for television was described by Croatian inventor Nikola Tesla (1856–1943) in U.S. Patent 613809. The Germans used remote control motorboats during WWI. In the late 1940s, the first non-military uses for remote controls appeared, such as automatic garage door openers. Zenith Debuts Worlds First Remote Control The Zenith Radio Corporation created the very first television remote control in 1950 called Lazy Bone. The Lazy Bone could turn a television on and off as well as change channels. However, it was not a wireless remote control. The Lazy Bone remote control was attached to the television by a bulky cable. It turned out that consumers did not like the cable because people kept tripping over the cord. Each rod was a different length to create a different sound that controlled a receiver unit built into the television. The first Space Command units were quite expensive for the consumer, because the device used six vacuum tubes in the receiver units that raised the price of a television by 30%. In the early 1960s, after the invention of the transistor, remote controls decreased in price  and in size, as did all electronics. Zenith modified the Space Command remote control using the new benefits of transistor technology (and still using ultrasonics), creating small hand-held and battery-operated remote controls. Over nine million ultrasonic remote controls were sold. Infrared devices replaced ultrasonic remote controls in the early 1980s. Meet Robert Adler Robert Adler was associate director of research at Zenith in the 1950s when the company’s founder-president E.F. McDonald Jr. (1886–1958) challenged his engineers to develop a device to tune out annoying commercials, resulting in the prototype remote control. Robert Adler held 180 patents for electronic devices, whose applications run from the esoteric to the everyday. He is best known as a pioneer in the development of the remote control. Among Robert Adlers earlier work is the gated-beam tube, which at the time of its introduction represented an entirely new concept in the field of vacuum tubes. In the book Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe there are a lot of characteristics that are considered male and female. In the story, which is about a man named Okonkwo. Okonkwo is a Nigerian man , who is a yam farmer, and for no reason wants to be labeled as anything other than manly. See in the Igbo society everything is gendered to male or female even the crops. The yam is consider the king of the crops, so it is no wonder why Okonkwo is a yam farmer. In this book it tells a story about a man who falls to his own destruction, all because he was trying to avoid being looked upon as a man with feelings. In the Igbo culture woman are treated as second class and servants in most cases. Her service is to her man first. The women are only good for the men to use as needed. They are viewed as a males possession. The woman are not allowed to do much of anything. They are responsible for cleaning, cooking, and some farming, when allowed to do so. They are to care for their hu sbands and their homes first and for most. If a man were to fall short in this area towards a woman, he could be dishonored as a man. My entire world is a fiery hue, like a sunset over the Egyptian desert. My eyes are searing with an incandescent chemical burn. I am having trouble breathing and cant speak coherently, and yet we are sitting in a parked car, waiting for my sociable sister to finish talking to her friends. Pepper spray is the weapon I used on myself on this day. Self-inflicted? Yes. Intentional? No. I was only eight. But, it was just as painful as if a veteran riot-squad officer had tried to take me down. This was the most excruciating pain I had ever felt – easily outdone later but, at the time, a galvanizing, teachable moment. The message? Do not look straight down the barrel. I doubt that my eclectic collection of ER visits is unique. But, I dont actually know anyone else who has needed surgery to remove a rock from his nose. Im not sure how to verbalize the object of this lesson, but Ive kept my nose clean ever since. All this notwithstanding, I would not call myself a klutz. My sister Natasha, one year my senior, seems to almost take pride in holding claim to the family title, and she is world-class. She once came home from a hike with 25 staples suturing a gash in her calf, having managed not only to trip while jogging down the mountain on a class hike (easy enough, I suppose) but to land on the one rock in the White Mountains capable of inflicting that sort of damage. Her ability to handle all of the curveballs she has been thrown inspires me, but I digress. I have always taken comfort in my athletic abilities, a genetic gift from my parents. My quixotic mother (outdoor enthusiast and glider pilot) and my father (former Navy fighter pilot, soccer coach, and my mentor) provided me with every necessary attribute that I might require to accomplish anything. But I never fully understood the concept of gifts or limitations, and honestly I have tended to be unaware of the amount of work, preparation, and thought that typically precedes a successful venture. At least thats what my father says. But then he goes to the emergency room almost as often as I do, and for similar reasons, except that one of his trips involved a chain saw mishap. My mother has gone more often than any of us, but frequently on more mysterious trips that Im not usually invited on. Like many kids, my childhood idols have been professional soccer stars, basketball players, and freestyle skiers. For me, the problem was that I grew up thinking I would actually do these things. As it turns out, I lacked the greater talents of the skiing wunderkinds around me. I was a more-than-competent skier. When he was home my dad would pick me up from kindergarten and we would go ski black diamond runs for the afternoon. But I grew up in the ski-town that produced Bode Miller and, Im pretty sure, several stars of future generations based on the way they are already skiing. A broken arm, finger, thumb, five dislocated vertebrae in my neck, severe migraines, and a couple of concussions have been the reward for my confidence and ambition while participating in â€Å"extreme† sports. Now, I am positive that there were some lessons available about caution, humility, and maybe interpretive physics, however, Im not sure they were engrained in me as well as they should have been. I left the terrain park that winter thinking all I really needed was a change of venue. Two weeks later, at a basketball tournament in Vermont, I ended up being taken by stretcher off the floor and to the ER by ambulance, having suffered a minor neck injury and another concussion. I was a smallish 13-year-old and had decided to jump in the way and take a charge from a 15-year-old who turned out to be Wilt Chamberlains nephew or some such. Im not sure he even felt it when he flattened me on his way to the hoop, and I like to think I got the call, but I dont remember. No surprise there. Danish physicist Neils Henrik David Bohr said something I find humorous yet inspiring: â€Å"An expert is a man who has made all the mistakes which can be made, in a narrow field.† I have made my mistakes, admittedly, in a rather broad field. My theme here was supposed to have been â€Å"lessons learned† and I wanted to paint a picture of a young man who is smart and mature and thrilled to embark on a fresh set of more intellectual ventures in college. However, Im afraid there is nothing in this essay that suggests I am exceptionally bright, keenly interested in college, or even adequately teachable. But I hope I have shared a bit of who I am with you, and that is what I keep hearing I should attempt on my campus tours. I would love to play college soccer, and I look forward to enjoying college life in typical ways. But I am even more determined to embark on a life of the mind in a new venue, and with any luck, substitute some of my ER visits with trips to the library. I started writing this thinking that so many visits to the ER were probably unusual. But it turns out there were nearly 100 million visits to the emergency room just last year. One in four adults went, and there were 38 visits per hundred people. And contrary to the widely held image of people without insurance or means seeking basic care in the ER, half the visits were for people who believed they needed emergency assistance, and the majority of the rest needed care during hours when doctors offices were closed. Also, to my surprise, these statistics are very similar across socioeconomic levels. Notably, people with postgraduate degrees visit the ER least often, and this is the final and perhaps most compelling reason for you to help me on my quest for higher education. And perhaps at some point in this journey, Ill find the club for students who have been victims of bizarre injuries and Ill feel right at home.

(Don’t worry: we’ll give you real world examples of double majoring at two schools with different requirements in just a minute!) #1: The Core Courses In general, universities require students to have completed at least 120 course hours- or around 40 classes- in order to graduate. Most liberal arts universities create a core that asks students to take a variety of classes from across multiple disciplines, including math, science, and the humanities. Once you choose a major, your university will give you a list of requirements you’ll need to fulfill to complete your major and earn your degree. In general, you’ll have to take somewhere between nine and 14 classes to complete your major. These are generally a mix of low- and upper-level courses designed to give you comprehensive knowledge in your chosen field. (Quick note: the number and difficulty of classes you’ll need to take in your major field varies between programs, so it’s very important that you double check on the requirements for your specific major at your specific university.) Okay...so what does all of this mean for a double major? Well, unlike a student with just one concentration, a double major will need to complete every requirement for two separate majors! That means you’ll have some additional courses to take before you graduate. The second step to double majoring, then, is taking a close look at the requirements for both of your majors and understanding what you’ll have to do to complete the programs in a reasonable amount of time. One of the biggest tricks to getting it done is putting your elective course requirements toward your second major. But first, a little about electives. Your electives are a series of classes (usually somewhere between five and 10), that are included in your core curriculum. Unlike your other credits, which have to come from a certain subject, your electives are essentially â€Å"freebies†: you can take almost any class on campus and use it to fulfill one of your elective credits! Because there are no stipulations on how you spend your electives, you’re free to use them however you’d like. With a little planning, you can knock out some maybe all!of your second major with elective credits. For example, let’s say Vivian has decided to pick up a second major in Chemistry at Northwestern. So what courses can be counted twice? The short answer is: it depends on your university’s requirements. While most schools allow your elective courses to count toward a second major, that’s not the case everywhere! And neither of those scenarios accounts for programs specifically designed to help students double major (like Rice’s double major in Art and Art History). So it boils down to this: while most universities allow for some amount of double-dipping, how this works varies from school to school. So be sure to check on your university’s specific requirements. Okay, now let’s look at an example of double-dipping can work: Christen has decided to double major in economics and political science. The political science offers a junior-level class on international economics, which the economics department has listed as accepted elective. If Christen takes that class, she can double dip by counting it toward both her political science and her economic major! That makes double dipping like a two-for-one deal, and it can help reduce both the time and financial burden of double-majoring. #5: The Time Frame The fourth step to double majoring is planning how long it will take to complete your double major. Many of the top universities, like Yale, require students to get approval before double majoring to make sure they can complete their studies in a reasonable amount of time. Other schools, like Brown University, only allow double majors that can be completed in four years. While most universities understand if it takes you extra time to finish a double major, it’s important that you’re aware that more time in school can translate to more expense. We’re going to walk you through the entire process of declaring a double major at two of the top universities in the United States. We’ll kick things off by looking at double majoring at Vanderbilt University, which is ranked as one of the top 20 universities in the nation by U.S. News and World Report. Vanderbilt has four different undergraduate schools, so for this example, we’ll focus on the largest: the Vanderbilt College of Arts and Science. #1: The Core Courses Like most universities, Vanderbilt requires students to have taken at least 120 credit hours (or between 30 and 40 courses) to graduate, and the first block of courses students have to tackle are in the school’s core curriculum. Vanderbilt’s core is called the AXLE program, which requires every student regardless of major to take three to four writing courses (depending on AP credit) and thirteen other liberal arts courses in six different categories. Vanderbilt gives students a lot of leeway in which courses they can take to fulfill the core requirements as long as it falls in the six general categories specified, which is good news for double majors! #2: The Major Courses Now it’s time to take a look at what the College of Arts and Sciences requires for double majoring. (Remember: these differ between colleges and programs, so it’s important to do a little research!) Luckily, the College of Arts and Sciences gives students a clear outline on their website about what it takes to double major. They write that students who choose to double major â€Å"must include at least 24 credit hours that are being counted solely toward the major.† Okay, let’s break that down a bit. First, we know that Vanderbilt does allow double majoring, which is great news! Second, they require a certain number of courses be specific to each major. In other words, a student will have to take somewhere between six and eight courses that only count toward each major. That gives a little space for double dipping, which we’ll talk about in step #4 below. Lastly, the outline points out that 24 hours is a minimum requirement. That means most departments will require more than 24 hours of coursework to complete a major. This is where it’s important to visit each department’s website and look closely at the major requirements. (Vanderbilt’s College of Arts and Science has 54 majors to choose from, so this might take a little time. But trust us...it will pay off in the long run!) #3: The Elective Courses Vanderbilt doesn’t specifically list electives as part of their core curriculum, but a little simple math reveals that on average, a student will have about five classes of elective credit, or hours they need to take to graduate that aren’t accounted for as part of the university core or major. That means that a double major can use those five classes to fulfill part of the requirements for their second major. #4: The Double Dip Vanderbilt does allow for some double dipping, meaning some of your classes can count toward both majors. As long as each major has a minimum 24 hours of dedicated credit, students can double dip with their remaining classes. (Again, the minimums are different from program to program, so this number might go up depending on your majors.) Here’s an example of how this might work: if Marco is double-majoring in English and Creative Writing, he’s required to take courses in the History of Literature and Diverse Perspectives in Literature to fulfill each degree. An English degree requires 12 hours of these courses, and a Creative Writing degree requires 6 hours of these courses. So instead of taking 18 hours, Marco can take the requisite 12 hours and fulfill the basic requirements for both degree tracks. He can do this as much as possible, but he’ll have to have 24 hours of coursework that only counts toward his English degree and 24 hours of coursework that only counts toward his Creative Writing degree. So depending on whether a student’s chosen majors overlap, they will be able to double dip on a few classes to kill two birds with one stone! #5: Declaring the Double Major Once you’ve decided to double major at Vanderbilt, it’s time to declare your double major to the school. This happens after you’ve enrolled at the university because Vanderbilt doesn’t allow students to declare a double major as part of the admissions process. In fact, double majors are usually declared when a student is either a sophomore or a junior. When you decide that a double major is right for you, the first step is to print off a Declaration of Major form. Once you fill it out, you need to deliver it to three places: the College of Arts Science and both departments you want to major in. You can’t just drop the form off, eitheryou’ll have to meet with a college advisor to go over your declaration. This is to make sure that your plan is feasible and reasonable. If everything looks good, the advisors will sign off on the form. Once you’ve collected the necessary approval and signatures, you file the completed form with the College of Arts Science, and you’re good to go! Unlike Vanderbilt, you can only declare a double major within the same bachelor degree program. You can’t declare a second major that would earn a Bachelor of Applied Science. So for this example, we’ll focus on the steps it takes to double major and graduate with a Bachelor of Science from the Stanford School of Engineering. #1: The Core Courses In order to graduate from Stanford, students must complete 180 units of University work. This starts, of course, by tackling the school’s core courses. Like Vanderbilt, Stanford gives students a lot of flexibility in fulfilling their core curriculum. Every Stanford student has to complete what Stanford calls their â€Å"General Education Requirements,† which include sixteen different courses in four different categories. (Stanford accepts AP and IB credit, so this number might be less depending on what classes you took in high school.) While it’s important for to explore all the opportunities Stanford has to offer, the School of Engineering cautions students to take math and science credits early so they can hit the ground running when they start to work on their major. #2: The Major Courses The College of Engineering separates the major coursework into two categories: the engineering core courses and the Depth of Major courses. Every engineering student, regardless of major, has to take a series of core courses that are unique to the school. These would include: 36 units in mathematics and science Three units (or one course) in technology and society Two courses in engineering fundamentals Like Stanford’s General Education Requirements, these engineering core courses will count toward both majors. That means you only have to take the core courses once while earning your Bachelor of Applied Science degree. Once those are complete, a student can begin tackling their Depth of Major courses! The Depth of Major courses are the classes that are specific to each engineering major and must be fulfilled separately in order to graduate. For instance, if you’re double majoring in Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, you’d have to fulfill these requirements separately. Even if a class is listed as counting for both majors, you’d have to apply it to one major over the other. That means you’ll have to take around 60 additional creditsor somewhere between 15 and 20 additional coursesto get a double major in engineering from Stanford. #3: The Elective Courses Also like Vanderbilt, Stanford does not include a set number of elective courses as part of their core curriculum. Additionally, the major requirements for each program vary quite a bit! Because engineering programs are so intensive, most students only have a few elective units available, so it’s important to make each one count! #4: The Double Dip As we discussed earlier, Stanford’s rules are very clear: they don’t allow students to double dip to fulfill their major requirements, no matter what college they’re enrolled in. So while the General Education Requirements and the engineering core courses can count toward both majors, the specific, additional criteria for each major has to be completed independently. In other words, you’ll have to take all the classes for each major with no overlap! #5: Declaring the Double Major To declare a double major, you have to do this after you’ve already declared your first major through the Office of the University Registrar. Double majors are approved through the same office by submitting the Major-Minor and Multiple Major Course Approval form. Unlike Vanderbilt, there’s no formal departmental approval process, though it’s very important you independently meet with departments to get advice for success. As a school, Stanford is very picky about letting students double major. They are committed to helping students graduate in four years regardless of how many majors a student wants to tackle. In fact, Stanford reserves the right to limit a student to a single major if it’s taking too much time even if the school previously approved a student’s double major. Challenges in Workplace Communication Anjeshni 1.0 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The main purpose of this report writing is to find out about communication and communication challenges that are faced by different people in their workplace. Our major focuses was on business house based in South Auckland. This was made possible by conducting interviews on three different people working for different companies and doing various research. After completion of this research it was easier to know how communication challenges are faced by people in their workplace and how problem can be solved. To start off on our research a request letter for interview was send to three different people working for three different business. This was done to find out communication challenges and strategic that are faced by people in their workplace. Time and date was set for an interview with them and interview was conducted with a set of questionnaire in relation to communication challenges at their respective workplace. The three different people that interview was conducted were Mrs Bikashni Prakash, Mr Romit Prakash and Ms Nicky. After the completion of interview thanks giving email were send to each one of them for giving their precious time and related information regarding communication challenges in their workplace. According to interview the most common communication barrier that was found in workplace were language barriers. As my interview environment was a supermarket and many customers that come in supermarket were of different races and not all of them know English. Some of the customers are from India and they speak Punjabi language so it becomes hard sometimes to communicate with them. The final step was to prepare report based on communication challenges and barriers that are faced at different workplaces with different people. Since communication is a vital part of any business it must be understand well by people a single breakdown in communication can lead to a big problem for a business. Communication is a simple definition but how we communicates becomes a lot more complex. Proper communication leads to understanding of a situation. If there is a communication breakdown misunderstanding occurs which leads to problem in a business. The theory of a communication states that communication involves both sender and receiver passing information through communication channel. Communication channel is a way in which we communicate. It is important for a business to choose a proper communication channel since it has different strength and different weakness. Communication are always complex and it is a two way process. Communication in a business can be of two type internal and external. Internal communication occurs within a company among employees, between employers, supervisors and workers. External communication happens outside the company it mostly occurs between customer or clients, suppliers, governm ent department e.g. bank, IRD and with other companies and stakeholders. Therefore it is a must to have better understanding of a communication and its process. 2.1.1 Types of Communication Verbal communication that is spoken face to face or through telephone. Non-verbal communication it is how we present ourselves through body language. Written Communication through letters, emails, internet and media. Visualizations – graphics, charts, maps and logo. Five main purpose of communication are to inform, persuade, create goodwill instruct and to inspire. 2.1.2 Advantages of Communication It helps people manage and maintain organisational operations. Communication happens in may form and it is different means for different situation. Communication is used to become familiar which leads to friendship. This is good for company since it helps workers to work together by knowing each other’s strength and weakness. But sometimes this cause distraction workers spending time chatting which affects the production. 2.1.3 Disadvantage of Communication Conflict is the main problem by the use of communication employees may disagree and argue with each other and management on a situation. It can cause tension and can affect the production. Conflict happens in a company due to workers demand not met and misunderstanding between and among workers. 2.1.4 Communication Barriers â€Å"Communication barriers is anything that gets in the way of clear communication between sender and receiver.†(Sandra 2006). Barriers are the main cause of communication breakdown. There are different type of communication barriers. Physical Barriers this happens in many different forms. It can cause by phone, internet, communication distance and physical objects in the way of a sender and receiver. Other physical barriers which cause communication breakdown can be tiredness which cause difficult in concentrate. Hearing, sight and speech problem also environment problem that is how when and why we communicate. Lack of non-verbal information. Technology or medium that is what we used to communicate e.g. phone call or txt. Technical problem sometimes happen when phone line is not clear or network is down. Grammar, spelling punctuation and sentence structure it distracted attention from message. Also due to lack of visual clues in the telephone conversation when don’t know the age or what’s the other person state of mind or expression. Emotional barriers this takes place when we are upset, worried or sad and can miss what others are responding. Anger, embarrassment and fear are strong emotion which affects the communication. Often people don’t express their emotion because sometimes it makes others uncomfortable. Not expressing emotion is a barrier because it inhibits the development of relationships, trust and open communication. Defensive, negative or overly assertive also affects means we don’t pay attention to suggestion for improvement or by breaking others trust and be too self-confident and unaware of others needs and rights. Language based barriers this is most common. The main factor is not knowing the language. Since New Zealand in a country of multi race different people all over the world lives here and everyone doesn’t know others language so it becomes hard to communicate with them. The influence of one language to another some words in some languages look much alike but it has different mean in different language. The way we pronounce words and using idioms i.e. unusual or non-literal meaning we give to words that are in common usages this leads to misunderstanding. Different abilities with language due to education. Tone the way words are said and by using jargon technical terms. Psychological barriers this happens due to religion, politics and valves what an individual beliefs. Personality is the nature and character of individual and the experience. Lack of confidence and feedback that we don’t receive and attitude to communication or style e.g. some people are better in speech then writing. Gender and Culture major issues in communication. Gender is the differences between men and women their listen differently. Men listen for information and know what to do next whereas women listen for feelings and empathise. Women concentrate on relationship while men focuses on tasks. Culture has many influence and impact on communication due to difference in traditions and behaviours the way we met and greet with others. Understanding culture difference is important in business. Technology there are many benefit of technology such as texting on mobile, sending email using PowerPoint for presentation and internet for research but still there are effects of this on communication due to lack of feedback since technology is not available to everyone. 2.2 TERMS OF REFERENCE This assignment was given to us by our Business Communication tutor Mrs Sheetal Singh. This is part of our Business Communication 520 paper. The due date of this project is on Friday week 12. Interview was conducted with three different people working for three different organisation in order to find out communication challenges faced by them at their workplaces. 2.3 OBJECTIVES The main objectives of this assignment was to find out communication challenges that is faced by different people at their workplace in New Zealand. During this research it was also found out how communication barriers affect work of an individual and to find out how to overcome those problem in a workplace. 2.4 METHODOLOGY The method used in completing this assignment is by doing interview of three individual working for different organisation. Also assignment as completed by doing internet and text book research. 3.0 FINDINGS 3.1 Candidate 1 Background My first candidate was Mrs Bikashni Prakash. She works for Food for Less Supermarket as a Checkout Supervisor located at 64 Atkinson Avenue Otahuhu. For the past nine years she has been employed in this company and has been living in New Zealand for more than eleven years now. She is an Indo Fijian and speaks Fiji Hindi and English. There are roughly 30 employees working for Food for Less and age group of employees are from 20 – 50 years. Her duties includes managing checkout, doing customer service, dealing with customers and suppliers. During her work experience she has faced many problems regarding communication challenges and barriers. 3.1.1 Communication Problems and Effect on Workplace The main communication challenges faced by Mrs Bikashni Prakash in her workplaces were language barriers since she is working for a supermarket and many of the customers that comes in a supermarket are Indians from Fiji and India. They are from many different cultures and races. It is sometimes difficult to communicate with these customers because of the language since some Punjabi customers don’t know English and their Hindi is quite different from Fiji Hindi. 3.1.2 Outcomes towards Communication Problems Her problem was solved by one of the staff who is Punjabi she seek help from her understanding what the customer was saying. She mostly spend her time with her workmates to know about different language, socialise with different people. If she is not sure about something she always ask for feedback from her workmates and by listening properly to what customers are saying. 3.2 Candidate 2 – Background Mr Romit Prakash is a Director of Globex Importers and Exporters which is located at Atkinson Avenue Otahuhu and has been living in New Zealand for more than 15 years. Mr Prakash started his company five years ago. He is an Indo Fijian and his main language is English and Fiji Hindi. There are roughly 15 workers working for him and their age groups are between 20 to 40 years. His responsibility include managing overall company checking all the packing and delivery of items are done properly and on time, dealing with clients and suppliers. 3.2.1 Communication Problems and Effect on Workplaces The main communication challenges faced by Mr Prakash in his company were gender and culture barriers. People working in his company are from different races who are Indo Fijian and islanders. They have different cultural behaviour and the way sometimes the workers speak makes it hard for understanding. They tend to speak their own language and not adapt to others. Gender barriers also happen in Globex since both male and female works here. Other barriers that affect operation of Globex are language and technology problem. Since nowadays everything is done by machines but sometimes due to breakdown of machines lead to delay in packing and production. Language barriers also affect his workplace since all his staff are always talking in their mother tongue language affecting others as not all are able to understand. This tend to make other staffs think that they might be talk against them so discrimination becomes a factor from here amongst the workers. 3.2.2 Outcomes towards Communication Problem He resolved this communication barriers by letting his staff spending some time together during breaks to know about each other culture and language. To overcome gender issues in his workplace he divided different sections of packing room to males and females so that packing was done amongst and no time was wasted. Since male workers were able to lift heavy boxes for loading and offloading whereas females were doing packing, sealing and labelling of products dividing work equally To minimise challenges related to technology issues, it was a rule that no mobile phones were to be used during working hours. All mobiles had to be put in locker so that staff can concentrate on their work instead of diverting their mind elsewhere. And another solution he tried to implement was by regularly servicing of machines and having spare ones so that if one breakdowns other one is available and work wouldn’t stop. 3.3 Candidate 3 – Background Ms Nicky is a Manager at Super valve which is located at 29 -33 Hall Avenue Otahuhu and has been employed for 6years now. She is from India and has been living in New Zealand for almost 15 years. Her responsibility includes managing checkout operations, general running operations of the supermarket, dealing with staff’s relation matter, dealing with customers and supplies complaint. They are roughly about 30 staffs working for Super Valve and most of them are Punjabis from India. Few Islanders and Indo Fijian are also working whose age groups range from 20 to 50 years. 3.3.1 Communication Problems and Effect on Workplaces The main communication problems faced by Ms Nicky at Super valve is culture and language barriers. It is a multi-racial supermarket and it has different races of customers. Some are Islanders, Indians from Fiji and India, Kiwi and Europeans. Sometimes aged customers come to shop who are not able to speak English and communication problems arises there. Culture barriers are also happening since workers working are from different races. Technology barriers also occur sometimes as well as emotional barriers this happens when a checkout operator or customer service personal are upset or having some personal problem it directly affected their work in terms of not smiling to customers and talking to them. 3.3.2 Outcomes towards Communication Problem She tried hard to overcome this problem by letting staff spending sometimes together, socialising to know each other culture and language. Ms Nicky always tried to have back up system available in case of technology or machine breakdown. Counselling are also affordable so that sometimes if management feels that any workers are in some types of problem, trainings are provide of how to serve customers and be friendly to them. All this relates to having small workshops within the company   4.0 CONCLUSION To conclude this research communication challenges that are faced by people at their workplace are basically the same. The major communication barriers that people face are language barriers. Other barriers that are found in workplace are culture and gender barriers, technology and physical barriers. Language barriers are the most common barriers in my research with responding with all the candidates facing communication challenges at their workplace. This can happen between co-workers or with customers. Technology barriers takes place since not everyone’s educated and don’t have access to technology or may lack the confidence, experience and knowledge to use them e.g. in most supermarket EFTPOS machine are available but some customers don’t have the knowledge as to how to swipe the card or what function to use for which account. Culture and gender barriers this takes place because New Zealand is a multicultural country and everyone should have equal right. It is very much important to understand and respect each other cultures and races. Physical barriers takes place due breakdown of communication channel or not getting full and proper information. The impact of communication channels and barriers on workplace blocks understanding of messages in many different ways which affects both sender and receiver. Aware of barriers can help to avoid communication breakdown and less effect on communication problems. Secondly barriers can cause organisation to business, customers and reputation. Not proper communication can cause communication gaps and bring misunderstanding in an organisation. Lastly, employees should understand each other and their culture which can help to prevent arguments and fights and people using slangs language often can be offensive and can lead to affect others workers in particular workplace and customers. 5.0 RECOMMENDATIONS After compelling all the information gathered through interviews and research some of the recommendations that can be made to prevent communication barriers at workplace. Most of general communication barriers can be overcome with knowledge, sensitivity by understanding theory and monitoring your behaviour. Instead of using technology for communication in some case communicate face to face. Socialization of workers with each other should be done to learn about different language and others culture. Try to use body gestures if possible in communication if other parties can’t understand your language. By acting ethically, openly and honestly which can bring positive communication. â€Å"Treating others as you wish to be treated yourself ’’ (Sandra etal 2006). By increasing awareness we can help to elimate effects of emotionality. Try to being sensitive to one’s mood aware of how that might influence others before communication an important message. By creating an atmosphere where emotions will not come as a barrier and by giving constructive feedbacks. Pay attention what others are saying try to listen carefully. Communication should not take place under mental stress and by using appropriate language which is suitable for recipient. By developing good communications, skills can overcome the communication barriers by understanding the basic of communication skills knowing what communication really is. By having courage to say what you think be confident and doing practice to developed advanced communication skills. By engaging your audience by making eye contact, gestures and avoid sending mixed message. By using body language beware of what your body is saying and by development effective listening skills. A Mother’s Love to a child

As a mother I have cared and tried to push my son†s education so that he can succeed in his life. I came from a large family in Brazil. I wasn†t the only child; I learned to share, how provide for myself, and for my 3 sisters, and 3 brothers. My father was a serious man; he had a job, and still came home to provide for all of us. During dinnertime he insisted that everyone had to be home and had to sit down at the table and talk about their day. This was a must in my family too. The reason why he had that rule was because he was a religious man, and meals should be shared with the family as well as conversations. No one had any choice of not sitting at the table, unless we didn†t want to eat. When I had a child, I waited for the right time to have one. I didn†t want to rush into motherhood responsibility until I had everything in order to support my child. My husband had to find a job, and so did I. We had a house, a car, and jobs to support my child; we were ready. When my child was born, I chose to go to the United States of America, so that my child can have a better life. In Brazil, the education is not challenging, and not recognized in other parts of the world as a higher education. For him to have a better education, a better standard of living, and for him to have what we never had, we had to give up our lives in Brazil. As the years went by I was always there for my son. Through my eyes as he grows older, he is still the little boy that I held in my arms for the first time. In his teenage years I have seen him grow further away from me. Every day when he gets home he goes to his room without talking to me, or saying anything about his day. I guess that is what all kids go through in these years, because of the stage of exploration of new things in life. Like driving, video games, girls, and puberty. I still love my son, and even if he doesn†t want to talk to me then I guess he has everything in order in his life. He is very intelligent, and I trust that he knows what to do, and do the right thing. I have noticed that he hasn†t come to me to say if he has had any problems in school. I guess to me he has no problems going on, or maybe he has it in control. I have always said to him every time he comes home, how was your day Miguel? He would always say, it was ok. When I heard that my son was having problems in reading, I was shocked. I couldn†t believe my bright boy was having such problems. I tried my best to make him study more, and succeed in life. Now it looks like he needs help in reading, and I am going to be there for him. The teacher told me that he had to memorize a book in order to pass the class. I was with him every day when he got home, helping him to study and memorize the story. When the day came for him to tell the story, I was waiting for him at home. When he got home, I looked into his eyes and he said â€Å"Mom, I did it. I passed! † I was so happy, and I knew he could do it. From that day on, I have never doubted my son on what he can do. He is a bright young man, intelligent, respectful, and responsible when it comes to work that is given to him.

The main scope of the approved project is to consolidate the IT infrastructure of Fresno, CA into the Chicago, IL location.
